not sure if I'm going in the right direction. The problem is this, all the comments for a post are stored in transients and for posts with many comments that data stored in the transient is so much that it goes over a limit (800Kb) that WP Engine suggests. This causes errors with their object caching, like not flushing correctly

or values getting stuck. You can see the relevant ticket on WPE's support area.
