The weather app says rain, and you check it again at the window while it pours. Someone in the office says "wow, it's really coming down". Yes. You were there. You explain the plot of the film in great detail to someone who was sitting next to you throughout. They say "so it was about a heist?" It was called *The Heist*. Your manager opens the meeting with "we need to talk about deadlines". Everyone has been talking about deadlines since January. Somebody writes it down as an action point anyway. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a black-and-white cartoon drawing of a man with wide eyes and a tilted, open-mouthed look of mock surprise, and it was used to reply to statements that were painfully obvious. Its source is not firmly established, but the face was simple to caption, and the deadpan "you don't say" got stuck on everything from a stated fact to a tautology.
